Kill Bill
|
|
This week seems to be running a Tarantino theme. Monday I was reading about Kill Bill in The Age (the Japanese are very amused by the Shibuya schoolgirls in the film's trailer). Tuesday I taught this Neo lookalike who, when asked about his job, tore off his hat and exclaimed "I'm a Monk". Finally, late last night I found myself sitting with a group of salarymen in a cool bar in the red light area around Kamata Station. A guy walked wearing a Hawaiian shirt, gold teeth and a big grin. We drank together for a while before he scurried off to 'an appointment'. After he left, the guy sitting next to me leaned across and whispered "That guy... he's yakuza".
Next time The Hawaiian is there I'm there I'm gonna ask him what he thinks of Tarantino's films.

Berlin is still my favorite city... Why? I guess it has something to do with the trees, the trams, the dozens of theatres and galleries. Its also the only place I've been where an 18 year old you've just met would take you to task about your politics! That kind of enthusiasm for discussion and debate doesn't exist in Japan.

After the past few weeks of partying, I'm really ready for a break. But housemate Rowan has some friends from Australia visiting and I can't really say no to having a few drinks in my own lounge room...

Nadine (snapped in Berlin)

Back in Tokyo after a couple of weeks away. Had a fantastic time! That said, its nice to be back home, even if it is only because I was starting to worry about the state of my liver (what with most nights ending somewhere between 4 and 5 am surrounded by empty Becks bottles).
Tomorrow I'm getting the photos developed and I'll post them here just as soon as they are done. Bless the Japanese - I'll have them all dumped to a CD within an hour of dropping them in the shop.

OK, so we had a minor quake today:

No damage, although I did run out of my classroom to check a cup of coffee I had been drinking wouldn't fall onto my computer

The Big One
|
|
A few days ago my housemate Rowan asked me if I had heard about the earthquake that is coming on the 16th. He told me that a scientist has predicted a big earthquake this coming Tuesday, and that he'd heard this information from a student.
It goes without saying that I was a little skeptical. But yesterday some other teachers mentioned this "prediction" and talking to a student who is usually very reasonable, I heard more details. Seems everyone has heard about the coming quake. The scientist who made the forecast has (according to this student) "been studying earthquakes for 8 years or so and believes that Tokyo will be hit Tuesday, plus or minus two days, with a earthquake measuring more than 7 on the Richter scale".
The scientist is apparently independent of any official organisation, and government officials say that there simply isn't enough data to make such a clear prediction. Again, according my student, this scientist "wouldn't usually be so frank, but as this earthquake is going to be so big, it was in the public interest that we know about it in advance"...
As Rickman says in Bob Roberts: "No if you will excuse me, I have to go and pray".
