I even brought my passport...

Last Monday I came across an ad in the Japan Times for a travel agency offering - oh yeah - tickets to NYC for 9, 800 yen. Part of a promotional campaign, people were advised to be at Tokyo Head Office at 10.00am Saturday morning where they could not only purchase cheap tickets to NY, but also to LA and Bangkok. The catch? Only twenty tickets available for each flight.

It goes without saying that I made my way to the office sleepy-eyed this morning, only to find another a line stretching from the door, around the block.

Oh well - the cost of staying in NY (even for a few days) would have killed me!

Looks as though you have to cut and paste the link into your browser - Fotopage doesn't see the whole line as an URL. Thu 11-Sep-2003 23:32

German Lessons

Met with my German teacher yesterday in Shinagawa. I THINK I'm improving, although those adjective endings are a real bitch to remember The real test will be when I'm in Berlin in two weeks time. Will I actually remember what I've learned? More to the point, will I be able to get people to speak German to me? Last time I was there, everything I said seemed to warrant an English reply.

ME: Ich nehme ein Kaffee, bitte.
WAITER: Sure, and would you like milk with that?

Oishii!

Had dinner in Ginza last night, celebrating the end of my taking antibiotics. Now enduring my first hangover in a while. Knocked back quite a few cocktails (as usual, the theme was vodka) and ended up paying a fairly hefty Y4500.
Eating out is THE thing I love about Tokyo. I read once that there is one restaurant for every eighty people in this city. You can actually go out for dinner every night of the week and spend little more than you would cooking at home (you'd be eating ramen and yakitori, of course, not kaiseki). For the record, last night we ate oden chicken, an avacado and radish salad and some kind of cheese fried in tofu skin. OISHII!

Immigration

Managed to survive my visit to Immigration in Shinagawa this morning. I am now the proud owner of a multiple re-entry permit! Without one, I would not be allowed to work when I return from holiday - I could enter the country, but only as a tourist.
Scary place. Up on the seventh floor is the detention center for those who don't have a proper visa. When you get off the bus to go in, half the passengers head for the gate marked "Detention Center Visitor's Entrance". Lots of kids and their mothers waiting to go through...

Its my weekend

After three weeks without a day off, I'm finally enjoying some time away from the office. Yesterday, I did absolutely nothing - sat around Rika's house playing computer games and watching daytime television. In the evening, I cooked pasta and watched The Others on video. Right now I'm trying to find the motivation to get moving and do some study before my German class this afternoon...

Set Lists

Thought I'd post Radiohead's Summer Sonic setlist:

1. There There
2. 2+2=5
3. Morning Bell
4. Exit Music
5. The National Anthem
6. Backdrifts
7. Sit Down, Stand Up
8. No Surprises
9. Bones
10. Kid A
11. Go To Sleep
12. Just
13. A Punchup at a Wedding
14. Paranoid Android
15. Idioteque
16. Everything in its Right Place

Encore:
17. Pyramid Song
18. A Wolf at the Door
19. Karma Police
20. Creep

Word has it that the band weren't going to play Creep - they didn't play it a day earlier in Osaka - and it was added at the last minute. Its a nice story, anyway

Blast that Blaster!

I've just been through one hell of a week. First I came down with a cold, then my computer crashed after being infected with the Blaster virus. To add to these woes, the weather here in Tokyo has been terrible!

Ahhh... thank God I'm going on holiday soon
