Call me a snob, but...
|
|
Mr Frost said The Producers succeeded because it was perfect for "the headspace that the public is in". "Australians have become very conservative, as the world has, and I think people want a safe bet, they want to know they're going to spend their money and have a good time. They're not particularly interested in experimenting and going to new things. They see 'The Producers, with Tom Burlinson, Bert Newton and Reg Livermore', and they say, 'There's three friendly faces there. We know we're going to have a good laugh'."
(taken from today's Age)
What happened? When I was growing up in Melbourne, a Dutch installation artist could pull a crowd by threatening to throttle a sheep as part of his 'sound sculpture'! Seriously, I wonder if Melbourne audiences really become that conservative?

The blame game
|
|
It goes without saying that I'm none too happy about the Australian Federal election result. That said, next month's US election is of course far more important. Lets hope the Democrats can capitalise on their recent gains.
Quote of the day comes from Pauline Hanson, who yesterday only managed 4 per cent of the primary vote:
| Quote: | | "I have no plans of deliberately remaining a public figure other than doing my dancing on television, because I don't see myself as a celebrity, I see myself as an ordinary Australian." |

Excellent piece from The Guardian's website on the psychology of the war film. While you're there check out some of David Mamet's other articles.

THX 1138 DVD

Take a look at this fantastic site for George Lucas' old sci-fi flick "THX 1138". A lot of money has clearly gone into the marketing of the DVD...
