Troy (abridged)
If your anything like me, you are in need of a laugh about now. Look no further than this abridged version of Troy. Reminds me of the hilarious abridged Hamlet I read online years ago (attributed to Richard Curtis). Now there's something to google...

Blogs+Spies=Blog tracking
Interesting article about the role of blogs in intelligence gathering. The last paragraph is hilarious - a 100 per cent accurate blog would be one without subjectivity, which is inherent in the medium! Still, I don't think its a bad idea - a conflict like that in Iraq is far more immediate when reading a blog such as Riverbend's than in any number of CNN live-from-Bagdad's-Green-Zone reports.

Ramen
Seems Ramen is going upscale
But what's this:
"The trend reaches extremes at Shiodome Ramen, a spanking new cluster of steel-and-glass towers next to but a world away from the decidedly lowbrow Shimbashi district."
Shimbashi lowbrow? Sure there are plenty of cheap eats for the 'salarymen', but I've never really considered this area lowbrow. People here make too much money and wield too much influence. Thoughts anyone?

Monopoly
Anyone who has ever played monopoly with me will recognise Danny Katz's alter-ego, "something vaguely resembling Donald Trump, but with less charm and more drool." In my case, my friends banned me from playing after a game in Berlin using a German board.
I won. But I had the German/English dictionary.
I certainly don't think I cheated (hey, I was just lucky, OK) but the looks on peoples face's when I said I wanted to play again told me that if I wanted to remain friends with Mish and Em, I'd have to repent and repent fast.
"Well then," I said, "how about Jenga?"

Shopping in Shimokitazawa
It had been a while since I'd been there, so yesterday I went with friends to Shimokitazawa, a quiet corner of Tokyo full of clothing and antique shops, cafes and bars. I used to go there all the time, but today was actually the first time I'd been since my monther visited Tokyo early last year.
Had lunch with friends at a Vietnamese place, "Trang Cafe", one of my favourite small restaurants in Tokyo. Later, I wandered around taking photos and checked out some of the antique shops (I'm going through some kind of Japanese antique phase at the moment).
While I was there I also bought a new pair of glasses - my fourth.
Does that constitute a fetish?

Blood: The Last Vampire
Spent the whole of my weekend at home watching movies and cooking. It was great to have some time at home after the past month of work, leaving parties and little else. Highlight was watching the short anime Blood: The Last Vampire. Like the other Production IG films I've seen (Jin Ro, Ghosts in the Shell and the anime sequence from Kill Bill Vol. 1) the animation itself was superb. I really liked the way the computer graphics blended with the traditional animation. The opening sequence in particular (on the last train to Asakusa) is some of the best animation I've seen.

You lucky, lucky people living in Germany The German Film Museum is currently showing an exhibition of Stanley Kubrick's research for such films as The Shining, Barry Lyndon and his unmade biopic of Napoleon. You can visit the website here. Lets hope the exhibition tours internationally!
