Dinner in Kawasaki

Different kinds of tofu
Cabbage stuffed with sashimi in a kimuchi sauce
Fried chicken with basil
View all 4 photos...
It seems that people like to read about eating out in Tokyo, so I thought I'd post a few more food photos

This time its dinner at a Japanese restaurant in Kawasaki. The food was terrific, and although the experience cost me a small fortune, I'm sure I'll be going back soon. The three of us ordered a Korean-style pancake, (what turned out to be) a huge salad, fried chicken, kimuchi-flavoured cabbage stuffed with sashimi, a selection of different kinds of tofu (including tofu skin, a kind of cheese tofu, fried tofu, etc.) and a stuffed omlette. For dessert we had fried potato and ice cream (tres Japanese and actually rather good) and a kind of traditional Japanese cake.

We also polished off a couple of bottles of wine and a few cocktails... oh well, it was pay day!

Unfortunately I didn't think to photograph anything until well after we'd started eating, but I think you get the idea...

Sweet Holy Night (sic)

Ahhhh... Christmas in Japan! Like everything else in this country, its a strange mix of the sacred and the profane - traditional carols sung by Disney characters, Santa wishing people a "Merry Christmas" outside temples...

For the Japanese, Christmas Day is part of the build-up to the traditional New Year vacation. Buying the family a Christmas cake and eating it on the 25th is as much a part of the seasonal celebrations as the Bonenkai with workmates (End of Year party) or bitching about the annual bonus.

I'm not quite sure how it happened, but I somehow nominated myself as the person to organize our office Christmas Party, which will be held Sunday week (21st). The last time I organized a party in Tokyo, I had half the people congratulate me on the venue (the 47th floor of the Sumitmo building in Shinjuku) and the other half complain about the expense.

So this time I've decided to politely ignore anyone unhappy with the venue!

At this stage it looks as though its going to be held at a bar 2 minutes stumbling-distance from Shimbashi train station. It doesn't come cheap, but it does include a nomihodai - as much as you can drink for two hours.

Pachinko!!

Sketch (BW)
Went down to Kawasaki this afternoon and found myself in one of those giant arcades. I thought I'd take some photos using the special effects built into my phone. I like this shot of some prizes, these little soft toys you haul out of a machine with a claw...

The Visit

Its official: I'm going to be in Australia late February/early March next year.

It doesn't look as though I'll be staying long - perhaps only a week in Melbourne, two days in Sydney and two days in Hong Kong on the way back. Same old story - Japanese company, I have to make like a Japanese tourist and pack a hell of a lot into the shortest possible time.

TOP 5 THINGS I'LL DO WHILE I'M THERE (DRAFT #1)

1. See that Bar Open hasn't been redeveloped as a Country Road or Starbucks.
2. Check out Fed Square.
3. Eat souvlaki, a meat pie, humous, etc.
4. See a band at the Espy (or anywhere for less than what I'd pay here - AU$80).
5. Watch non-English language films.
